Plans Gone Awry!

I had a weekend full of plans that did not work out! On Friday, some friends and I were going to visit Arlington’s David M. Brown Planetarium to view their weekly Friday showing of “Just Imagine”. But it turns out the Planetarium only gives shows during the school year. We decided to watch Despicable Me instead. We’d gone to see it in Bowling Green, but something like twenty minutes in, the film started slipping off the projector and that was the end of that. (FYI: A matinee show at Bowling Green’s five cinema theater costs $2.50; a regular show is under $5.00. And that’s without a student ID. By comparison: we each paid $11.00 for the non 3-D version of the movie at Ballston’s mall theater.)

Saturday, I had plans with some other friends, Evan and Jaime, and their adorable one-year-old son Stephen to visit a “Starlight Cinema” seasonal drive-in movie event taking place off of Trinity Parkway in Centreville. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was the movie on schedule. We didn’t know much about it, but when we showed up we saw that the movie was being held in a large parking lot with two giant inflatable screens set up – and all of the available spaces near the screens were long gone. We parked to the far right in a handicap space (having been directed by the parking dudes to do so) and walked around. Stephen was running around at top speed and it was very impressive! His parents got him a balloon and Evan had some flavored shaved ice and then it was clear that we might as well leave. No one had thought to bring chairs or a blanket since we didn’t think the event would be this full (or that it would be in a parking lot). Plus, it was close to Stephen’s bedtime anyway and he had worn himself out. So we went back to the Valentines’ house and watched part of Yeti and then Frost Giant on Syfy (formerly the Sci-Fi Channel). I love horrible monster movies!

So although the weekend didn’t work out exactly the way we had planned, I still thought it went pretty well. Now it’s nice and sunny out and I’m going to go take a dip in the pool!
